It’s a common quote thrown around the Christian world, ‘expect a miracle.’ But, of course, the very thing that makes miracles wondrous is that they buck our expectations and are rare. If everybody was doing them all the time, there would be nothing all that miraculous about them at all! They would lose all significance.

I was preaching on Peter’s two miracles in Acts 9 on Sunday. During that sermon, I explained why I don’t expect to see miracles worked through individuals today, how I think this is different from issues surrounding the gifts. Moreover, I explain why the miraculous signs of Christ and his apostles are a key reason that we can trust the Bible as authoritatively God’s Word and, as a result, why a closed canon means we shouldn’t be looking for miracle workers today.
